The condition of the jute industry in the state of West Bengal and the rest of India is in turmoil. A variety of incidents have rocked the jute sector over the years. The murder of the CEO at the Northbrook jute mill has rocked the industry greatly. The Northbrook jute mill was recently under siege by disgruntled workers and the CEO was murdered in broad daylight. It is a great setback for the jute industry and the impact has already been felt.
Ghanshyam Sarda is one of the reputed business leaders from the city of Kolkata. He has invested in several projects over the years and owns a number of jute mills across the country. The current situation in the jute industry has been vehemently protested by him. As one of the frontline business leaders from the city, he wants the stalemate to end immediately.
The state and the central governments have not done anything for proper development in the jute sector. The industry is undergoing a deficiency of orders as a result of which the jute industry owners are suffering. Outside interference has also played a havoc role in the jute mills. As per the industry insiders, the murder at Northbrook jute mill was a result of a pay related dispute between the workers and management.
The incident at Northbrook is just an example. Several other jute mills across India are on the verge of closing down. The closedown of the Northbrook jute mill has resulted in a job loss for all the workers. The families of these workers are in distress as all the workers have lost their employment. The union related problem also acts as one of the major worries for the industry.
The previous union led by CITU had performed well but the current one has failed to do so. Whenever a problem occurs in the jute mills, there is local political interference which aggravates matters further. The current chief minister of West Bengal is always looking for industrialization in the state.
The state government needs to interfere in the current operation of the jute industry and take some new steps. An appointment with the current chief minister of the state has been called for in this regard. The Ghanshyam Sarda Kolkata group wants to do everything for the further development of the jute industry.
